The FANUC A06B-0077-B403 is the βiS 12/2000 — a 1.4kW AC servo motor from FANUC's βi Standard series, one of the most widely deployed servo motor families in CNC machine tools manufactured from the late 1990s through the present.
The βiS series positions itself as the cost-effective, application-focused member of FANUC's servo motor portfolio, offering reliable, high-performance servo drive capability for the vast majority of CNC axis drives.
The 12/2000 designation describes this motor's performance point: 12 is the motor's torque constant identifier within the βiS family, and 2000 is the rated speed in RPM.
At 10.5 N·m rated torque and 2,000 RPM rated speed, the A06B-0077-B403 delivers its 1.4kW continuously — making it appropriate for CNC feed axes on mid-size machining centres, turning centres, and grinding machines.

The βiS (Beta-i Standard) series covers the core performance range that encompasses the majority of CNC machine tool axis drive requirements.
The 12/2000 places the A06B-0077-B403 in the middle of the βiS range — above smaller motors used for lighter axes and below larger units used for heavy machine tool axes.
FANUC designs the βiS series for direct integration with its own βi-series servo amplifiers, with the CNC system providing motion commands and the amplifier executing position, speed, and current control loops.
The b128ia encoder designation identifies a FANUC high-resolution serial absolute or incremental encoder built into the motor's rear end cap. Serial encoders in the FANUC β-series use a dedicated feedback cable connecting the encoder to the servo amplifier's CN2 encoder connector.
On machines configured for absolute position detection, the b128ia encoder retains its absolute position count through power cycles — eliminating the need for reference return after each machine startup.
The B403 variant includes an integral 24V DC brake — a spring-engaged electromagnetic holding brake built into the motor housing. In normal servo operation, the CNC applies 24V DC to the brake coil, releasing the friction disc for free rotation.
When the CNC removes the 24V brake signal, the spring forces the friction disc against the rotor, generating enough holding torque to prevent gravity-driven axis movement. The brake is a holding brake, not a dynamic braking device.
The A06B-0077-B403 is compatible with FANUC βi-series servo amplifiers — specifically the SVU (Servo Valve Unit) and SVPM (Servo/Spindle Power Module) series designed for βiS motors. FANUC publishes motor-amplifier compatibility tables in the servo motor parameters manual.
Physical dimensions between β and βi generations differ, and encoder types are incompatible. Direct replacement requires both a matching physical mounting pattern and amplifier firmware that accepts the b128ia encoder protocol.
IP65 means the motor is dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction. In CNC machine tool applications, this covers exposure to cutting fluid coolant spray and swarf. For most machining centre and turning centre installations, IP65 is adequate protection with appropriate cable sealing.
Alarm 417 indicates an overcurrent condition detected by the servo amplifier. Root causes include: motor winding short circuit, cable insulation failure, servo amplifier power transistor failure, or servo parameter error. Isolate the motor from the amplifier and check each element separately.
The holding brake is tested by commanding the axis to a known position, engaging the brake, and attempting to move the axis against gravity. Signs of brake wear include: axis drift after servo off, brake chatter or vibration, burning odour, and alarm 404 if the brake is dragging during servo-on operation.
